Words Of Wisdom From Harry Truman

From the wisdom of President Harry S. Truman:

" It doesn't matter how big a ranch ya' own or how many cows ya' brand, the size of your funeral is still gonna' depend on the weather."

When President Truman retired from office in 1952, his income was substantially a U.S. Army pension, reportedly $13,507 a year.

Congress, noting he was paying for his postage stamps and licking them himself, granted him an allowance and later a retroactive pension of $25,000 a year.

When offered corporate positions at high salaries, he declined, saying "You don't want me, you want the office of the president, and that doesn't belong to me.  It belongs to the American people, and it's not for sale."

In May 1971 Congress was preparing to award him with the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday.  He refused to accept it, writing "I don't consider I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

We now see that other past presidents have found a new level of success in cashing in on the presidency, resulting in untold wealth.

Today many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices.  Political offices are now for sale.

Did you know that one of the most famous cars in the world is located in Crestwood?  We're referring to the Ferrari that was used in the popular television series set in Hawaii, "Magnum P.I."

How about the costume worn by Adam West when he played Batman in the hit 60's television series of the same name?  This and much more memorabilia from television and movies can be seen when you visit Hollywood Park in the RiverCrest Shopping Center.

Hollywood Park has long offered good, clean family entertainment.  With its miniature golf courses, indoor bumper cars and games of skill, it can even reward you tickets which are redeemable for prizes.  Now they have introduced a whole new concept in racing cars outdoors.

You can now challenge your family and friends to see who the best driver is.  You won't have to contend with engine noise or gasoline fumes or waste fuel when you drive at Hollywood Park.  These are quiet, environmentally friendly electric cars that will revolutionize the fun.

There's nothing like this offered in the area.  And guess what?  You'll pay less for your ride than what the old technology competition is charging.

You won't starve while at Hollywood Park.  You'll want to try their award-winning, freshly made pizza or some of the fine sandwiches in the restaurant area.  Their pot roast sandwich is a real winner.

Hollywood Park is a great place for birthday parties, Halloween parties or holiday parties.  They can accommodate groups of 10 or more.  This means a good time for everyone and no cooking, cleaning or wear and tear on the house.

To learn more about party opportunities, their phone number is 389-7275.  Hollywood Park has been an excellent source for family entertainment for the 19 years they have been located in Crestwood.

And they are one more reason why we proudly say, Smart Crestwood Shoppers Shop Crestwood.

When To Use 9-1-1

Use it to report a crime, a fire, a heart attack, a serious injury or any situation requiring the immediate response of a fire truck, police car or ambulance.

What the 9-1-1 Operator Will Need To Know

2.  The address where you are.
3.  The nature of the problem.

IMPORTANT: Call 9-1-1 first in all emergency situations.

What the 9-1-1 Operator Will Tell You To Do

1.  Stay on the phone.  Don't hang up.  The 9-1-1 operator will transfer you to the appropriate emergency response agency.  SPEAK CLEARLY!

Do Not Call 9-1-1 For:

1.  Road/travel/weather information or for household repairs, minor complaints such as excessive noise, littering, legal advice, loose pets, etc.

Crestwood's non-emergency telephone is 385-5131

Note:  If you accidentally dial 9-1-1 do not hang up!  Tell the operator.  Failure to do so will result in needless dispatch of emergency personnel.

Recycle Your Papers Here

This is just a reminder we have a large recycling bin for newspapers at the Crestwood Village Hall, so don't just throw your newspapers away, bring them up and recycle them here.

There is a limit on our natural resources, and any time we can recycle it helps extend the life of these resources.  A portion of the garbage collected around our village is also recycled.  Even the yard waste which you are asked to separate from your regular garbage stream does not go into a landfill immediately.  It is composted.

Once this process is completed, it is used at garbage landfills.  The days of being a throw-away society are long gone.  Now we must conserve and recycle.

The quality of life for future generations is dependant on all of us to be less wasteful and to support new technology for recycling our resources.

Fire Department to hold Health/Fun Fair Oct. 18

Saturday, Oct. 18, will be the day for the Crestwood Fire Department's 11th annual Health and Fun Fair.  The event will be held at the Nathan Hale Middle School, 135th and Laramie, starting at 9 a.m. and running until 1 p.m.

The Fair's goal is to raise funds for the purchase of firefighting, training and communication equipment to benefit the village.  Previous Fairs have resulted in the purchase of such life-saving equipment as the Jaws of Life, heart defibrillators and thermal imaging cameras.  These have already saved many residents' lives.

For those not intending to participate in the blood-drawing program that will be offered, a good way to start the day will be the special all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for $6 per person.

Supercuts will be on the scene offering haircuts for a $5 donation (or more), with all proceeds going to the Crestwood Fire Department..

Also on the agenda will be a Keep Your Kids Safe program, which includes fingerprinting and ID cards distributed by members of the Cook County Sheriff's Police.  It is sponsored by Rep. Robert Rita.

Another feature will be the Teddy Bear Clinic sponsored by the Midwestern University Pediatric Medicine Clinic.  Each child will receive a free Teddy Bear.

The Illinois State Police will hold an-always interesting demonstration on vehicle rollovers and offer child safety seat checks.

Again this year, Ingalls Memorial Hospital will hold a screening program for a variety of maladies with a full team of personnel starting at 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. The blood drawing requires fasting for an accurate reading.  Fair veterans suggest you come having fasted for the blood draw and then dig into the pancake breakfast.

For those who haven't fasted, coupons will be sold allowing you to take the tests at a later date.  Screening includes diabetes, cholesterol, prostate cancer, anemia, thyroid disease and cardiac risk.  The testing is offered until 11 am.

Many insurance policies don't cover preventative medicine.  If you don't have insurance, or if your insurance is high-deductible don't miss this opportunity to receive potentially life-saving services at reduced costs.

Flu vaccinations will be given by Value Village Pharmacy of Dolton, subject to availability.  Vaccines will be free to Medicare recipients with proof of insurance.  Medicare HMOs such as Humana are not included.

The Fire Department thanks residents and friends for their past support and looks forward to seeing all of our residents at the Health and Fun Fair.

Parking Ban Enforced All Year Long

Crestwood has a year-round parking ban from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. on village streets.  On narrow streets parking is limited to one side of the street, and signs are posted to that effect.  The ordinance is for safety of our residents and businesses and enforced throughout the year.

Please Observe Our Local Speed Limits

* It is believed in good faith that the following content can be found in the October 2008 (Number 378) edition of The Crestwood Adviser and is for general reference and/or research purposes only.  For further information regarding the information listed here, please contact The Village of Crestwood in Crestwood, Illinois. *

Speed-limit signs are posted throughout the village and indicate the maximum rate of speed for a motor vehicle and not a suggested rate of speed.

You never know when a child or an animal will dart out in front of your car and you will have to stop abruptly.  That's why we suggest you drive under the posted speed limit and make complete stops at all stop signs.

The same applies for RiverCrest Center and that you observe not only the traffic signs but drive through the parking areas in your appropriate lane.

Cutting across lanes can cause accidents.  Now that we are in the fall season it gets darker earlier, but mild temperatures still prevail and people are still riding their bikes and playing outdoors.

We urge all motorists to slow down and be alert to what's going on outside their vehicle.

Crestwood Residental Garbage Disappears, and No Bill Appears

If you're a new resident, or one who has enjoyed the service for years, you may wonder who pays the bill for our garbage pick-up service.  It's been free to single-family homeowners for the past 39 years and also free to condominium and townhouse owners since they have been introduced into the Village of Crestwood.

The village picks up the tab at a cast of more than a half-million dollars a year.  The weekly service has always been excellent and permits residents to discard a variety of items from grass clippings and bundled branches to tables and sofas.

The one exception is building materials, and even those are accepted during our annual Clean-Up Day in May.

If you're not aware, it should be noted that garbage pick-up rates have risen dramatically over the years because of diminished land-fill capacities and higher fuel costs to transport refuse to a dump site.  Following are what residents in other communities are paying for their household garbage pick-up.

Now you know what you're missing.  We say that with tongue-in-cheek, but these numbers are fact and need to be recognized.  While on the subject, remember not to put your cans and refuse out before 6 p.m. the day before collection, and remove the cans before 6 p.m. on collection day.

Yard waste should be separated from regular waste, and branches must be tied and manageable in four-foot bundles.

We've all heard that there is no such thing as a free lunch, but our residents can say they enjoy free garbage pickup in Crestwood.
